My 39th Birthday was coming up and we have been so busy lately with moving, sorting out the sale of our house, etc. The kids and I needed to do something before we head back to the madness of the 2022 school year.
While browsing Facebook, I kept seeing a gorgeous image of Lake McKenzie pop up each day as a sponsored post. This was for a day trip with Fraser Explorer Tours for $239 per adult. I thought this was great value. I chatted to a friend Amy and we researched further. In the end we decided to do a 2 day trip and this included staying overnight at Eurong Beach Resort. Day 1:
We arrived at Rainbow beach and parked our car at Rainbow Sands Resort. Parking is secure but not undercover which is fine. $10 per day or part there of. The service was amazing and reception is open from 7am – 5pm daily. Highly recommend.
We walked to the Shell Service Station which is almost next door to where we parked the car. At approximately 8am our tour bus arrived. Patrons must be fully vaccinated to participate and are required to check in. Masks are also required.
We headed to Inskip Point to catch the barge across to K’gari.
The barge trip took approximately 10 minutes. The tide was high so we had to use the old sand miners track. It’s great that the bus is fitted with seatbelts. I’m amazing at how much grunt the buses actually have!
First stop of the day was Lake McKenzie! This was absolutely breathtaking! The water was crystal clear and refreshing. So calm but you have to be a competent swimming to venture out into the deeper waters. There is a sudden drop off so please supervise your children at all times. No food is allowed at all. The park rangers are there supervising as Dingos frequent the area.
Next stop was Central Station. There is a lovely walk here and guided tour provided. See photos below.

Next stop was back to Eurong for a buffet lunch and a sneaky Pimm’s Birthday cocktail!
After lunch we departed for Lake Wabby. This is a 5km return moderate walk. Chloe didn’t want to do this however she persevered. The lake is so worth the effort to get there.
Tip: Please ensure you wear enclosed shoes for this walk. I did it in thongs and ended up burning my feet on the super hot sand across the sand blow! Take plenty of water, insect repellent and your swimmers.
